I presented candidates for examination in the International Baccalaureate (IBO) Diploma in Biology at Standard and Higher Level, and the Edexcel International General Certificate in Secondary Education (IGCSE) in Science (Double Award).
The IBO Diploma Program in Biology is a rigorous pre-university course of study. The assessment is comprised of 3 external written examinations and continuous internal assessment of an interdisciplinary project and a mixture of short- and long-term practical investigations worth 24% of the final grade awarded.
The Edexcel IGCSE in Science (Double Award) is a two-year course of study. It takes approximately two-thirds of the subject content of each of the Edexcel IGCSE single sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), and combines them to be worth two IGCSEs through 3 external written examinations, This provides candidates a base to further study in a range of advanced level Biology, Chemistry and Physics courses.
I was guided by the recommendations of the new Qualifications Curriculum Authority (QCA) Key Stage 3 English National Curriculum on teaching and assessment in Science to students in lower secondary. I taught Science under the main strands of Energy, electricity and forces, Chemical and material behaviour, Organisms, behaviour and health, and The environment, Earth and universe.
I also taught Cognitive Acceleration in Science Education (CASE) lessons as part of my teaching philosophy on Thinking Skills and Teaching for Understanding.
